May 31, 2018—At the recommendation of the SAA Intellectual Property Working Group, the SAA Executive Committee agreed to sign on to a Joint NGO Letter on the Proposed WIPO Treaty on Broadcasting, drafted by Knowledge Ecology International. As IPWG noted, the current proposed treaty “creates a new exclusive intellectual property right that reaches too broadly, creates post-fixation rights, and contains inadequate exceptions and limitations.” SAA stands with many other groups in expressing concern that “negotiations on a broadcasting treaty have not clarified a number of important issues, nor addressed core concerns from civil society and copyright holders.” Read the full letter here.
